Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) Laboratory Technician
Role overview
This occupation is found in a wide range of organisations, including but not exclusively, chemical, primary and secondary pharmaceutical, biotechnology, formulated products, nuclear companies; and analytical science services, dental laboratories and educational establishments.
The broad purpose of the occupation is working at the forefront of technology to carry out both routine and one-off laboratory testing (and manufacturing where relevant) and perform a variety of technical support functions across the organisation.
In their daily work, an employee in this occupation interacts with the laboratory manager and colleagues, internal departments such as manufacturing, procurement and quality, internal customers such as medical staff, teaching staff and students, external suppliers and customers such as service engineers, delivery drivers, regulatory bodies and inspection teams e.g. HSE.
Entry requirements
- Five GCSE’s at Grade C/4 (or above) including Level 2 or GCSE C/4 or above in English, Maths and Science.
- If an Apprentice has not already achieved Level 2 (GCSE C/4 or above) English & Maths they must: -Study for and achieve Functional Skills Level 2 English & Maths.
- Initial Assessment on enrolment Level 2 Maths & English
Qualifications obtained
- L3 Apprenticeship Standard in Laboratory Technician
- L2 Functional Skills English and maths (if required)

Regular formative assessment, development of a portfolio demonstrating learning and development activities with their application in the workplace.

Key information
- Enrolment is roll on roll off all year round, primarily based in the workplace.
- Additional training is delivered on Campus 6 times per year and remotely via Teams.

Additional information
Current Delivery Involves:
- Workplace visit every 4 weeks to include Professional Discussions and Observations
- A day in College 6 times per year
- A progress review every 12 weeks with dedicated trainer assessor and line manager / workplace mentor
